The historic Colin Glen Forest Park is a beautiful wooded river glen comprising of 200 acres of scenic woodland, rier, open grassland, waterfalls and wildflower areas. The park, formerly known as McCance's Glen is located just 15 minutes drive from the city cnetres of Lisburn and Belfast and is the perfect location for a family day out. Special events are held throughout the year. The car park is open 9am - 5pm daily and the visitor centre is open 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday all year round.
Colin Glen Forest Park has been described as Belfast's 'Green Lung', and is a beautiful wooded glen, situated on the Stewartstown Road between Belfast and Lisburn. It stretches from the River Lagan at Dunmurry village, to its headwaters at Tornaroy overlooking the City of Belfast. A community based environmental organisation, the Colin Glen Trust has managed the Forest Park since 1989. Within the Forest Park there is a 50 acre reclaimed landfill site, which was formerly a brick works and refuse tip. The Colin Glen Trust was set up to restore the site to its former glory, once the proud hunting glen of the Marquis of Donegal and the McCance family, local linen manufacturers. The landfill sites were sealed and capped, followed by planting of 1000s of native trees and ponds were established allowing the return of local wildlife to their natural habitats. All this was achieved with the strong support and help of the local communities, providing a common interest and focus for environmental concerns.
Since then Colin Glen Forest Park has developed an unrivalled educational resource and is widely used for project curriculum work by schools, colleges and universities. Up to 7,000 children each year use the guided facility for pond dipping, river projects, tree planting, wildlife observation and conservation studies.
Colin Valley Golf Centre
Consisting mainly of the Colin Valley Golf Course, Dunmurry Lane, this excellent 9-hole par 33 course attracts players from throughout Belfast and beyond and has recently completed a successful cross-community GolfTech Project. Introducing young golfers from both communities, who would otherwise not have had the opportunity to meet, they were given instruction on golf etiquette and golf tuition from professional golfing instructors.
